Does the thought of speaking to a group make your heart pound; sweat pour from your body?

Do you lack confidence?  Or do you want to meet people who have similar interests as you?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, Toastmasters is for YOU!!

Why Toastmasters?  Because it works!

Did you know???

The fear of public speaking is called glossophobia.  It is believed to be the single most common phobia, affecting as much as 75% of all people.  Did you know that up to 60% of people are turned down for a job because of insufficient communication ability?

YOU are more than welcome to come along to one of our meetings to learn more about our club and how, by becoming a member, you can improve your public speaking and communication skills.

Imagine having to give a speech or presentation - whether it is at work or in a public forum - and doing it with confidence and really connecting with your audience.  South Melbourne Toastmasters Club can help you achieve this.

Why Toastmasters?  Because it works!

Communication and Leadership Development

Learning to be a confident Public Speaker

South Melbourne Toastmasters provides regular speaking opportunities and supportive peer evaluations at bi-monthly meetings, helping members to continually build their skills.

The Club aims to ensure everyone who attends its meetings has the chance to speak in some capacity - whether giving a formal speech, an impromptu speech, an evaluation of another speaker, as time-keeper or as a guest providing an opinion of the club meeting.

Toastmasters International has decades of experience, providing easy-to-read manuals, leading initially to the Competent Communicator award after completion of ten speeches.  The manuals assist speakers to add new skills with each presentation; and provide for a written evaluation to aid improvement.

Leadership Program

Toastmasters also has a leadership development track.  The Competent Leadership manual provides opportunities for all members to use experiences at meetings and in other club activities to fine tune their leadership skills and receive feedback for further development.  Targeted leadership skills in the manual include time management, delegation, facilitating, critical thinking, planning, motivating and team building.  On completion of the manual members are awarded Competent Leader.

Toastmasters Educational System

The educational program is the heart of every Toastmasters club. It provides members with a proven curriculum that develops communication and leadership skills one step at a time, with many opportunities for awards and recognition along the way. The communication and leadership tracks are not mutually exclusive; you may participate in both at the same time, if you wish.

  • You progress along each track by working through a series of manuals, each of which offers a set of carefully crafted projects to complete.
  • Each project includes an evaluation guide, which gives club members an easy way to provide immediate feedback as the project is completed.
  • Once you become a member, you can begin the educational program right away.

The New Member Kit includes the following manuals to get you started in both tracks:

  • Competent Communication
  • Competent Leadership
  • Your Speaking Voice
  • Effective Evaluation
  • Gestures: Your Body Speaks

What happens at Club Meetings?

A typical meeting at South Melbourne Toastmasters Club is made up of 15-20 members and lasts 90 minutes.   Each meeting gives members an opportunity to enhance their public speaking skills by:

Conducting meetings

Meetings usually include a short business session which helps members learn basic meeting procedures.

Giving impromptu speeches

Members present one minute impromptu speeches on assigned topics.

Presenting prepared speeches

Three members present speeches based on projects from the Toastmasters Communication Program manuals.  Projects cover topics such as speech organisation, voice, language, gestures and persuasion.

Presenting other assignment

There are many other roles at a meeting.  Many of these focus on leadership development based on projects in the Toastmasters Leadership Program Manual.

Offering constructive evaluation

Every speaker is assigned an evaluator who highlights the speakers strengths and offers suggestions for improvement.
